Access to nutritious food should be a human right

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, an estimated 23.5 million people live in a food desert and half of those people are a part of a low income family. A food desert is defined as "urban neighborhoods and rural towns without ready access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food," (USDA). The facts are there, and yet many Americans still refuse to recognize that people in this country lack the proper nutrition that they need to live a healthy life. People who live in a food desert are more likely to suffer from obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Some people say that the convenience stores are suffecient for people to live off of. I strongly disagree and say that access to nutritious food should be considered a human right. In fact, I belive it is a human right. It is not fair for people to only have a convenience store with fatty potato chips and candy to live off of. For some people, they have to drive many miles to get to a grocery store with fruits and vegetables and still be able to come up with the funds for transportation. Remember, half of these people in food deserts are a part of a low-income family. Sooner, rather than later, something has to change. People need to understand that food deserts are a real issue in the United States so that we can all work together to provide nutritious food to Americans who need and deserve it the most.
