On Monday’s workshop, I wrote about my backyard and how I viewed it as a child. Writing about my backyard growing up made me realize just how much I love and appreciate the backyard that I grew up in. Here is what I wrote on Monday:
Just beyond our back porch was my oasis. With the lush green trees, the steamy greenhouse, and the gardens with an array of colors this backyard had everything I could ever want. This suburban backyard was larger than a typical backyard giving my brother and I plenty of room to play Frisbee, kickball, and football. When I wasn’t playing sports in the backyard with my brother, I was usually up in a tree. My favorite tree in particular to climb was the ash tree near the center of our yard. I enjoyed being up in that tree because I could see what was all around me. When I sat in that ash tree I could see my dad getting the lawn mower out of the back shed, my mom picking marigolds from the garden, and my brother trying to convince me to play football with him. More importantly, I saw the family that loved and cared for me in the backyard that I will always call home.
This was just an exercise to practice using sensory detail and imagery. However, this particular piece of writing lacks conflict right now because I was just getting my basic thoughts and feelings about the backyard out in writing. If I were to continue writing this, I would add more sensory detail and add some conflict into the story.
